Not living in a flood zone?

A common misconception is only those living in one need flood insurance. That is not necessary the case. Flooding in low-risk areas accounts for 20 percent of all flooding.

Flooding can occur due to:

  • Heavy rain

  • Melting snow

  • Tropical storms or hurricanes

  • Levee or dam failures

Most homeowners policies to not cover flood damage. You need a separate policy for that. The good news is inexpensive flood policies, also known as “preferred risk,” are available for properties in these low-risk areas.
